This October, eleven LondonEnergy employees will raise money for North London Hospice by taking on the Royal Parks Half Marathon.
Among them will be Kerry and Lisa, sisters and colleagues at the Kings Road Reuse Shop.
The two sisters have both been running for some time, although they came to it in different ways. Lisa first started running regularly through a run club. It wasn’t quite what she had expected: rather than the competitive atmosphere often associated with sport, she found a welcoming, communal feel and enjoyed being coached. There is something special about learning from an expert, Lisa says, and it also helped her feel safer. With a coach, she learned how to avoid injury and look after her wellbeing while running, which helped her feel more confident about staying healthy and fit for work.
Kerry got into running with the help of ‘couch to 5k’, an NHS app recommended by a fellow Slimming World group member. Since then, she has found running to be a powerful outlet for her mental health. However heavy things can feel, running gives her space to work through her thoughts and focus on what she can accomplish. She also finds it empowering to see how far she can go. Recently, after setting out on a run in her neighbourhood, Kerry was surprised to find she had gone 3k further than she had anticipated.
So, what led them to sign up for the Royal Parks Half Marathon? Lisa laughs and gives Kerry some credit for the idea, while Kerry explains that the run felt like the perfect storm. Both sisters have faced barriers to training, from Covid-19 and work schedules to changes in their personal lives. But running a half marathon has long been a goal for them both, and taking part with LondonEnergy felt like a great opportunity. They are looking forward to doing something not only for themselves, and together, but also for a good cause and alongside people from across the company. It is a chance to get to know colleagues personally, away from the workplace and management structures, and to share the achievement together.
