LondonEnergy Statement Following HSE Prosecution
LondonEnergy wishes to express its sincere regret for the incident that occurred on 13 May 2022 at the LondonEnergy EcoPark, and for the impact it has had on the individual involved and their family.
LondonEnergy prides itself on being accountable and prioritising safety. Over the past five years, the company has consistently been recognised by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), receiving both Gold and Silver Awards. These awards recognise strong performance, well-developed occupational health and safety management systems and culture, effective risk control, and low levels of error, harm, and loss.
The company’s commitment to ensuring that industry-recognised safety standards were in place at the time of the incident was reflected in the judge’s determination of the case. The fine imposed was significantly lower than the maximum amount that could have been applied, taking into account LondonEnergy’s previous strong safety record, its cooperation with the HSE, and its public service role.
LondonEnergy, however, acknowledges that the circumstances that led to the incident fell short of the high standards we set for ourselves. Since the incident, LondonEnergy has invested significant resources into understanding what happened and why, ensuring that measures are put in place to prevent a recurrence. This has included a comprehensive review of operational procedures, employee training and competency, and site plant and infrastructure.
While the temporary facility where the incident occurred has now been decommissioned in accordance with the site’s existing development plans, the company has implemented a range of improvements across its facilities. These include introducing proximity sensors for all vehicles and pedestrians. These sensors are designed to detect the presence of objects or individuals near plant or machinery, helping operators and personnel stay aware of potential hazards and maintain a safe distance from moving or dangerous equipment. The company is also trialling and implementing additional safety technologies, such as illuminated walkways with projected lights, traffic control systems, HALO exclusion zones which project a visible light barrier around vehicles, and Artificial Intelligence pedestrian detection alongside CCTV recording on mobile plant.
LondonEnergy accepts full responsibility for the failings that contributed to this incident and has responded with comprehensive measures to address each area of concern identified by the HSE. The entire organisation is committed to maintaining the highest standards of health and safety—not merely to comply with regulations, but as a core value that underpins everything we do.
We apologise sincerely to the individual involved and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring an incident of this nature does not occur again.
