LondonEnergy has partnered with Waltham Forest Council to reduce the amount of disposable coffee cups used in the borough and recycle more of those that are used.

The #MochaDifference campaign launched today, and we gave away 100 reusable cups at Waltham Forest Town Hall. The campaign aims to highlight the amount of single-use coffee cups thrown away every year, encourage people to recycle their coffee cups and to swap their disposable cups for a reusable ones.

According to a recent Environmental Audit Committee report we use 7 million disposable coffee cups in the UK every day – that’s 2.5 billion every year. Half a million of these are littered, and less than 1% recycled.

In addition to giving away the #MochaDifference reusable coffee cups, we installed coffee cup recycling units in the Town Halls Severy Hall. These new recycling units will help capture approx 17, 000 cups for recycling and prevent them from ending up in the general waste where they are lost forever.

All the coffee cups collected will be fully recycled, and the recovered fibre will be used in the manufacture of new products.

Commenting on the #MochaDifference initiative LondonEnergy’s Ben Napper said:

“Coffee is the world’s most popular drink, and, in the UK, we drink around 95 million cups every single day. While things are improving, single-use coffee cups continue to unnecessarily consume a significant amount of valuable and limited natural resources. We hope that as well as having a direct impact in reducing single-use cups that this initiative will also get people thinking about the benefits of taking their cup the next time they want a coffee and in their way help to #MochaDifference.”

The Campaign will be launched with Hackney Council at the end of June. Watch this space for further details.
