2018 LondonEnergy launches Coffee Cup recycling scheme At Hackney Council

LondonEnergy has launched the #MochaDifference Coffee Cup Recycling campaign, in partnership with Hackney Council.

The campaign aims to highlight the benefits of reusable cups and provide a solution to recycle disposable coffee cups. Reusable coffee cups were given away at the launch, and people signed the #MochaDifference Pledge to do their bit for the environment.

According to a recent Environmental Audit Committee report, we use 7 million disposable coffee cups in the UK every day – that’s 2.5 billion every year. Half a million of these are littered, and less than 1% is currently recycled.

The campaign aims to capture more disposable coffee cups for recycling and prevent them from ending up in landfill. Recycling units will be placed at Hackney Town Hall and Hackney Service Centre.  The disposable coffee cups collected will be fully recycled, and the recovered fibre will go towards producing new products such as high-quality paper and plastic furniture.

Commenting on the #MochaDifference initiative LondonEnergy’s Ben Napper said: “We hope that as well as having a direct impact in reducing disposable coffee cups that this initiative will also get people to purchase a reusable cup the next time they want a coffee and to help to #MochaDifference.” #MochaDifference was successfully rolled out at Waltham Forest Town Hall in May 2018
